Hi

I want to know about one of the settings in the PROFILE option of the member. When we say PROFILE in the command prompt inside the member it will give us various settings about Number -on,Number off, caps on.etc..

In that i want to know about PACK options...What is that and what it is used for ?

I hope my question is clear

PACK is used to determine whether data is to be stored in a compressed format or the standard format.

Thank you..Will it give a compilation error when we have this ON in a cobol element.
I have problem related to this..we use a tool named ENDEVOR to maintain the history of changes. This tool helps in keeping versions of change. This similar to a Visual Source safe..The problem is ,the base version had the profile of PACK off and the thing which i put in after the change had the profile of PACK ON So now the endevor tool is showing a change with all the lines of the code...and it has overiden all the history of changes. I want to know how is the PACK option related to this ?

Hope I am clear again.

Hello,

If you want to play with settings that you do not research first, you at least need to use a "play" dataset rather than a pds your "real" work is in.

Your change history may be lost. I'd suggest you talk with the people who support Endevor and see if they can "roll back" to the previous stable position of that/those module(s).

Hello,

Let me try this another way - unless/until someone in authority tells you to use PACK ON - do not use it. It may or may not cause problems depending on what you've done and what tries to use it.

I believe you do not yet understand. Above, i told you what PACK is used for.

I strongly advise you not to experiment with anything other than a meaningless dataset that has no real code or data in it - nothing yoj are experimenting with should ever be managed by Endevor. You may not only damage something of "yours", but may damage something that multiple teams/projects use.

I didn't experiment with the datasets....This is the problem some one who works with me done it and i have to rectify it...ya i do know i have take the element from endevor put it back in the same state i.e with the profiles and put it back again. Before going forward for corecting it i feel i should know about the problem.....I understood PACK is related to compresing the size(correct me if i am wrong) of a member...

Thanks for all the quick replies..It really made sense and helped me to understand

Yes, PACK is related to compressing the size of the member.
