Varible length records sort with VB file

I have a doubt on Varible length records sort. can any one help me.

my control cards looks like below
SORT FIELDS=COPY
OUTREC FIELDS=(10,140)

its working fine if my input and output files are FB. if they are VB its not working can any one tell me what is the reason.

The error message (which you failed to post) says it all, you need to include the RDW in the output.
Some thing like FIELDS=(1,4,10,140)....
