Hi,

In a JCL step can we determine how many GDG generations are currently present?

The IDCAMS command LISTCAT.

Read the report, or send it to a file and process it by any program you wish to find the last line with the currently existing datasets.

The LIMIT is also included in the report, which is useful for generation management - e.g., notifying you when the LIMIT is about to be or has been exceeded, hence bumping the oldest generation.
