fb fixed block, all records are the same length, handy when the data is all similar.
vb variable blocked, the records have the potential to be different lengths, handy where the data is different.
You might find the vb is mostly used, but that is not necessarily true, some shops/applications rely heavily on fixed length records.
vb is handy if you do have different length data on the same file, using fb would require you to make all records equal to the longest and pad the shorter ones with empty space. |
