Upload avatar from pc not working anymore

A while back I used a function that allowed me to upload my own avatar from a file on my pc. This was working fine. Today, I noticed that my uploaded avatar was no longer working (showed an x for the image), so I had to choose one from the gallery. I really like my own avatar better than the ones in the gallery and would like to use it here as I do on other boards. Can the function to upload our own avatars from the pc be restored again? Or is there another way to use our own avatars?

Terrific! Much as I like the prehistoric squirrel from Ice Age, being the owner of four adorable pet rats I like my Professor Rat avatar better. :-)
