I'm going to revise my original calculation slightly.
According to the Using IBM 3390 in an MVS Environment manual, Using the 3390 Track Capacity Table chart, the maximum number of bytes is 56,664 per track.
So, dividing 1GB (1,073,741,824 bytes) by 56,664 bytes/track = 18,950 tracks. There are 15 tracks per cylinder, so dividing 18,950 by 15 gives about 1,264 cylinders. I used a value of 55,996 bytes/track for my previous calculation, since it's not really possible to access every available byte on a track. |
