Is there anywhere in the SMF file an information regarding the serial label number of a dataset on a tape ?
Like, if I do a :
LABEL=(3,SL) ...

where can I get the "3" from ?

If there is no such information, then does anyone have an idea of how to figure out if a mount ( SMF 14 record ) is "stacked" as an additional dataset on a tape, or is a new one on it ?

The LABEL=(3,SL) means : a data set on a magnetic casette, or tape is a 3rd data set. I think you have other information about this 3rd data set.
For reading you can define into DD JCL statement the following parameters:DSN, UNIT, LABEL, VOL=SER. IF you have DITTO program you can know the divice structure, what contains the SMF data sets.
