I'm sure you are aware that the mainframe is a complex piece of machinery that does a very good job of monitoring and testing itself, but there is always additional testing that is done.

In our shop, as in most, we use Omegaview (Candle) to test and monitor the basic system infrastructure, such as paging rates, contentions, bottlenecks, DASD performance, etc.

We use Mainview AutoOPERATOR (BMC) to test and monitor messages and events as they occur; we use this to test CICS transactions; we use this to page and notify the support groups when a potential problem is detected.

We use Formula (Managed Objects) to run synthetic tests on various applications, especially those that support our Web customers. We test IP addresses, email servers, FTP processes, and navigate through various web sites. All of this information is accumulated and is used to determine application availability and service levels.
