Suppose you have to get a back up of some imp Dataset. After copying what you will do to verify copying....Thats where comparison comes into picture.
Apart from this, suppose you have to find out the differences between two datasets, you go to compare them.

To know the changed code in cobol program or changes in your dataset ,we go for comparing datasets.
you have many tools like Comparex, ISPF 3.13, Insync
If you want to compare the Code since the last save just type COMP SESSION the differences will be highlighted
