Hi,

Our installation is in the process of migrating from z9 environment to a z10 system. the storage being used by these two systems are Standalone boxes and my management is not ready to spend on the Flash copy or any other copy services technology.

As Part of the migration we are required to move all the data. We have two options here,
a) Back up everything on 3590 tapes, convert the 3590 tapes to 3592 and then restore on the DS8100 being used by z10.

b) The second method was suggested by my manager, that we ftp the data on to Windows system and then ftp it back to z10.

I am sure PS and PDS will work fine. But i am confused about VSAM, Since it has to be converted to PS and then ftp' ed and then Repro ed back. Please suggest if this can be done. Also request your help in knowing other methods/techniques that can be used for VSAM transfer between storage boxes.

Thanks,

How much data do you have to transfer? Have you talked to the vendor installing the z10 to see what they recommend to move the data? Why not FTP direct from z9 to z10? There's no technical reason you can't unload the VSAM files to flat files, FTP them over, and then REPRO them into z10 VSAM files.

Our method in the past has been to connect both storage boxes to one system, define the new volumes and copy files with standard utilities.

It's a shame there's not a common tape device to aid in migration of data. Don't you have an existing tape library to move to the new system?

EXPORT / IMPORT is what I have used in the past, no need to know the VSAM defines before the restore.
