How can we check the status of the database(Up/Down) without firing a query?

rather a generic question,
I suppose that the interviewer was a little more specific and
used some more exact terms
what do You mean...
IMS, DB2
IMS CONTROL REGION, DB2 SUBSYSTEM
and finally
DATABASE, TABLE.... |
