I have used LABEL=RETPD=45 while creating a dataset. I have read some where that the tape data set is to be held as long as the data set is cataloged.
When I checked the data set information it is shown as below
Creation date . . . : 2008/08/05
Expiration date . . : 1999/01/00

1999 means a past date.
Can some one explain me why it is showng as this..

ranjith,

All is clear?

So you understand that 99000 is a fictional expire date that tells the tape management software to expire the tape when it is no longer cataloged?

I am not clear yet.
So you mean to say 1999/01/00 does not have any significance.

That's correct. Jan 00, 1999 is not a true expiration date. That is just the date display format for tapes created as EXPDT=99000.

If you use CA-1 as your tape mgmt software, their screens display this as Expire Date='CATALOG' rather than the "date". This reflects that the catalog entry controls the real expire date.
