I noticed you recently moved a few recent posts to 'off topic'...

My observation is that a new poster may not know the process here. I suspect they posted here, then came back some time later and could not find their original post and made a new topic.

My suggestion is lock a topic but leave it in the same forum for a few days. Then to follow up with email to poster.

Hi Pedro,

This particular topic, i moved to "Other Mainframe" because it was posted in COBOL. . .

But you are correct, tossing topics into Off Topics and locking them can surely confuse new people.

At issue (i believe) is how to provide service and not waste lots of time on things that are very common/repetitive. This is of course most often seen with newcomers who even if they want to follow the "rules" often have "adventures" trying to do so. Often, they are told to "search", but if you are not sure of the correct words to use (i.e. ones that will match icon_wink.gif ) it is tough to search. On the other hand, there are quite a few who could care less, would not stoop to looking for themselves, and expect their answer asap.

For my $.02 explaining why, locking the topic, and leaving it where posted (if in the correct part of the forum) could be sufficient. I see it being a pain to have to "remember this one to move later".

Thoughts?

d

Perhaps part of the locking of a topic could be automated to be moved later. If just feasible, just leave it where it lies.

Hi,

I had been thinking about the same since some time (locking a topic, after saying - these topics are not eligible for discussion);

/Madness On
as a new comer in mainframes when I started searching my queris on net, there were times when I didn't know what is the "key word" to search on...phew and when you asked your "senior" co-worker, he would reply- don't you know this much even..!!.. icon_evil.gif

As if he knows everything about mainframes since birth and the first word he spelled after birth was "Mainframes"

/Madness off

But yes it's necessary to stop/control un-necessary traffic of the site, for that matter I would suggest:

1. The link of the thread where 'such topics' are listed should contain the at least one link to the "solution providing similar thread", which can be embedded there permanently.

2. Lock the topic after directing the poster to the above said thread

3. The moment topic is locked & moved, an PM should be routed (automatically) to the poster telling about which forum (URL) the topic is been moved.
