Whats the major difference between inrec and outrec function

whats the major difference between inrec and outrec functions in sort???
when we need to reformat a file and do a sort of the reformatted file which function needs to be used.

INREC and OUTREC have the same functions. The difference is that INREC is processed before sort, merge or copy and OUTREC is processed after sort, merge or copy. Use INREC to reformat a file and then do a sort of the reformatted file.

The following figure describes the order in which DFSORT statements are processed:
