Q) In a typical mainframe environment whether mainframes SAN storages are exclusive to machine or shared by other open systems also.

Hi,
I think the storage devices are not shared by open systems. Though I am not sure. When MVS communicates with the device like DASD, it just passes this info to channel subsystem and then channel subsystem do the required processing and pass the info back. Moreover device can be shared between other system complexes. If open system has to use the device it might have to go through the API sort of thing which will able to get the access but directly accessing the device is a bit difficult. I think Printers can be shared between MVS operating system and open system through TCP/IP network.

Thanks,
Dinesh
