It depends upon setting of you shop. In our shopw we can not store VSAM files on Tape. But I heard that in some shope it is possible.
We generally store VSAM Files on DASD.

Hi, From my understanding VSAM datasets can only be stored on DASD, no matter its ESDS or KSDS...

I suppose that a vsam can be exported on tape but the allocation on tape is not possible.
Anyway some tools can migrate a vsam on tape(data and index) so I suppose that a method exist to do something near your question.
