FREE COBOL EDITOR

hi i am working as a software engg in an organization in mainframes technology. i needed information regarding where can i get a free cobol editor( simply to write cobol code more easily). i do not need to compile it rather i should be able to type it there and make a file which i ll upload to the mainframe.
so please guide me if any one knows about such an editor. i find typing cobol code on the mainframe less efficient and slow to use. so i want an editor like for example we can use Microsoft visual studio for java codes which uses different colors to facilitate better readability.

Hi Subrat,

To Download the CobEdit software u should use Download Manager software or else u should first download that and after that u click on the software it will automatically download. I think they have some tie up with that software or they might have developed that.. any way use the above steps. Let me know if u can't icon_cool.gif

Subrat,

The name of the cobol editor is "Programmer Studio 4.3".

Go to the link http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Misc__Text_Editing_Tools/CobEdit.html
and down load the studio.

thanks to all of you for spending so mush time of yours to find a free cobol editor for me. icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif
as per my requiremnts... i needed just an editor to write cobol codes and need not compile it.
so i finally got a free editor

lemosoft cobol ide is trail version, majority of them on the internet are trail versions...
the final result of my search are :

1) www.pspad.com/en/download.php
here you can download the free editor for windows were one can write cobol codes.
go to MS Win95 support and download
PSPad 4.2.5
is last PSPad editor version support MS Windows 95.

and install it. after install in open a new file go to VIEW on the top and click on change syntax, there we have to select cobol to get the desired syntax...

2) normally everyone can easily get eclipse software for java and similar work, there we have to add a plugin for cobol available free on the internet and your eclipse can be used for devlopig cobol codes..
one can get the plugins at
www.eclipse.org/cobol/
click on Download COBOL Plug-in 3.0 Beta-2 (Windows/Linux/Solaris & Eclipse 3.0.1)
March 1, 2005
and we will get a zip file which on extracting gives a features folder and a plugins foledr. take all the stuff inside features folder and copy it into the features folder inside eclipse folder( wherever you might have installed eclipse) and do the same thing for pugins as well. be carefull not to delete any of the preexisting stuff in the features and plugins folder inside eclipse folder..
then open the eclipse, go to windows at top and click on preferences there one has to select cobol from leftside and it ll contain the editor, debugger and templates( set them as you wish)

again, ther are 100 solutins to one problem, so keep looking for it and help others who are in need.

there are some other solutions which i am yet to explore.
they are :

Nice Work. I found CONTEXT is one of the best for Mainframe Programmers as it supports COBOL, COBOL 85, REXX, JCL, ISPF, ASSEMBLER and SQL.

Here is the Links:

Main program: (1.5 MB)

www.contexteditor.org/index.php

Download the attachment "Mainframe Highlights.zip" (Login to see the attachment link), unzip it, then COPY all the " .chl " files to <context installation folder\highlighter (By default C:\Program Files\ConTEXT\Highlighters)

Now you can write / edit COBOL, COBOL 85, JCL, ASSEMBLER, REXX, SQL & ISPF programs using Context.

Install ooRexx or Regina Rexx, then you can execute ur rexx codes from conTEXT editor without switchin to command prompt

just hit ctrl+F12 you can see a SHELL window with output of ur rexx script
