We use Attachmate for our 3270 emulator. They have a file transfer facility that uses IND$FILE to transfer files between the mainframe and the desktop. I have no problems using it to send and receive files from the MVS (zOS) directories. But, I can't figure out how to transfer files from the Unix directory to my desktop.
The Attachmate documentation is no help and the IBM documentation references mvslogin and others functions I have never heard of. I have seen it done at other mainframe installations, but not here. Can anyone point me in the right direction? |

From one of the IND$FILE web sites (with emphasis added by me):
Quote: |
IND$FILE file transfer
Mainframe file transfer copies files between your computer and a 3270 mainframe using the IND$FILE host program. As an administrator, you can choose to transfer files using either TSO, CMS, or CICS host filing systems.
From the Host file system drop down list, select which IBM 3270 operating environment the host is running. ZFE supports TSO (Time Sharing Option), CMS (Conversational Monitor System) and CICS. The default selection is None. |
Your best bet would be to transfer the Unix System Services file to an MVS data set BEFORE using IND$FILE. |

The fundamental problem here is not Attachmate; it is the TSO IND$FILE command that you must use with Attachmate. IND$FILE is not part of Attachmate and Attachmate has no control over the future of IND$FILE.
In my judgement it is unlikely IND$FILE will ever be updated to allocate *nix style paths or properly support *nix style paths and *nix style I/O. Worse, support for *nix style paths would require a radical restructure of the command syntax. This restructure would most likely break every 3270 emulator (including Attachmate) until they are patched to support the new IND$FILE syntax.
It seems to me you have two immediate alternatives:- Use FTP.
- Follow Mr. Sample's idea of copying the USS file to an MVS data set and then use the Attachmate file transfer.

I am already copying Unix files to MVS using IKJEFT01, then using IND$FILE to transfer files to my desktop. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a better way. I am training people to take over web service support from me and I didn't want to pass along inaccurate information.
Thanks for confirming my thoughts. |
