We have requirement to dynamically have the server name / user id & password to be provided into the FTP Control card
Can we use NETRC option to pass the user id / password dynamically to the FTP step
Is it like with NETRC option we need to always provide the id/password in the NETRC dataset or can ID/PWD be provided at a application level instead of providing at the dataset level |

Could you explain this a bit more?

Yes, Have a first step write a single record with USERID PASSWORD into a dataset say WELLS.NETRC.DATASET.PS
On the second step(FTP) use the WELLS.NETRC.DATASET.PS dataset under //NETRC ddname. |

The whole point of the NETRC data set is to provide the user id and password in a data set that can be secured using RACF (or whatever security package is used at the site) so this sensitive data is not in the JCL.
As long as the user id and password exist in the data set when your FTP job step executes, how you put them in it and when is up to you. |

If I were an auditor and caught this practice I'd write it up immediately. Bad, bad idea. |
