Hi,
I am trying to install z/OS 1.13...I have only mod3 volumes in my site(DS6800 box). Do i need to necessarily use mod9 volumes ?? if so please suggest me the PDF/process for carving the mod9 in my box.
As an alternate I INITed several mod3 volumes to check the spanning option using Logical Volume setup in Modify system layout panel option of CPP...Now I am left with 4 Over allocated mod3 volumes and need to resolve the same. For the minimum I can allocate 1 logical volume to 1 physical volume however that is crossing the limit of 3339 cylinders(mod 3).
When I display the datasets falling under these volumes, I can see single datasets(i.e. a SMPPTS or and ZFS file) is occupying more space.
Is there a CHANGE command where I can modify the dataset attributes to span across volumes pls ?
Regards,

A model 9 is not required multiple model 3 disks will do just fine. It just means you will have to do more work.
By default the SMPPTS will be allocated as a PDSE with about 3000 cylinders. If the maintenance has been Accepted the dataset can be reallocated much smaller. (we have one allocated with 1000 cylinders and it is only 30% used)
The Root ZFS can be allocated as a multi-volume dataset. However if you initialize a disk with a small VTOC and place the VTOC at the beginning of the disk (VTOC(0000,1,14)) and do not allocate an INDEX. The ZFS should just fit in a model 3.
The bad news for you is z/OS 2.1 is much bigger, a model 15 (5 model 3)
is required |

Nevilh,
Tks for the reply. I have few questions. I am using a driving system(using COD) with a minimum configuration i.e NO SMS !!!
I am using the CPP panel to install a ServerPac and in option M -Modify system layout.
As said earlier....For the minimum I can allocate 1 logical volume to 1 physical volume. When i browse a single logical volume, there are several PTS datasets i.e PTS,PTS1,PTS2...is there a way i could move it to single volumes or shall i modify its alloc and give 1000 cylinders to each one of them thinking it is going to take only 30%?
Also for the ZFS my driving system is not a SMS controlled one...I do not have option to edit and add more volumes to a single dataset.
Pls provide your valuable inputs...Ty |

You do not need multiple SMPPTS datasets. You can allocate 1 with sufficient space. Copy the contents of all the PTS datasets into the one large one and then you can delete the datasets that are no longer required. After this you will have to go into SMP and update the SMPPTS DDDEF.
For the ZFS if you need to make it a multi-volume you can use ADRDSSU to dump the dataset. Then delete the ZFS , and restore it specifying multiple volumes.
However I would dump the ZFS, delete it, and then reinitialize the disk with
a small VTOC at the beginning of the disk and then restore it. |

Nevilh,
I played with the below options to move some of the datasets to individual volumes.
D Data Set Summary (SUMD)
L Logical Volume Summary (SUML)
For one of the ZFS dataset the CPP panel shows as below, I do not have an option of modify it...pls advise.
CustomPac --------- Data Set Attributes 1 of 2 ( ST210224 ) ----------
Data set Name ==> OMVS.SBBOIMR
Shipped Name : OMVS.SBBOIMR
Data Set Type ==> ZFS (HFS or ZFS) Shipped : ZFS
Data Set Element Type : FS
Category : Target
Logical Volume ==> RES007 Shipped : RES007
SMS Managed ==> No (Yes or No)
Physical Volume : GSYSV5
Primary Tracks ==> 87489 Shipped : 87489
Secondary Tracks ==> 8749 Shipped : 8749 |

I had a look at the WAS manual, it has the following warning
Quote: |
WebSphere Application Server for z/OS repository data sets (SBBOIMR and ABBOIMR) can require more space than is available on an IBM 3390-3 DASD device. Do not use 3390-3 DASD or smaller disk devices for these data sets. |
I saw you already asked how to Define a model 9.
Good Luck |

Nevilh,
Thanks for the PM reply. Think I have not done the IODF part correctly. I have created the MOD9 volumes in storage box. I am trying to use that in my system...I added a new range of i/o devices in my IODF and issued a SOFT ACTIVATE...when i try to vary it online it is saying USB is not connected with device....Looks like I need to do a HARD ACTIVATE to update in the HSA first before using it in software...am i doing something wrong here in any of these steps Pls advise ?
