I think that is really difficult without using a jcl because all the parameter you need for the allocation are usually long.
I suggest you to write a script or a set of IDCAMS instruction to do it.

I hope in this suggest.

you can use 3.2 and option V to create VSAM cluster but for copying and viewing it is not possible through ISPF you need separate tools like FILE AID and STARTOOL

I don't know much about this, but the shop I'm in now uses DITTO to view VSAM files through ISPF.

You select the file via 3.4 and it automatically presents it via DITTO. I don't know if update/copy is available since they also have FileAid and I've never used DITTO.

Has anybody else encountered this?

Hi,
As said by one of our friend, we could use 'V' option in 3.2 to create VSAM cluster, but it does involve lot of parameters to be filled in.
To view the VSAM files using ISPF, you could just make use of AMS Modal commands "PRINT IDS(/) CH" against a particular VSAM dataset in 3.4 screen.
I think "copy" can be done only by using FILE-AID or FILE-MANAGER as such.

The webpage at the bottom of the message may be of some help.

I had used the BR command at another site that didn't have either File-Aid nor Ditto, nor any of the other fancy file editors. And it worked! It is basically an assembler program that loads the file into storage. I had even assigned it to a PF key and used to point-and-shoot to browse VSAM files from JCLs.

Hi Panda,

This is a good link...

I have a doubt here. Where do we need to place these assembler/rexx programs in ISPF to make this browsing work thru all JCLs that we use?
Do we need place these in system specific libraries?

Thanks,
Kumar.

For the BR command to be used from the DSLIST view (ISPF 3.4), or to utilise the point-and-shoot function, the assembler code needs to be assembled into a load library that's concatenated to the ISPLLIB allocation.

Once you have downloaded the CBT tape file and have got the assembler source code, you may have a read of the comments describing the usage. I haven't seen the CBT tape (with the BR code) recently, but it was very user-friendly. All you had to do was change the JCL (job card, SYSLIB and SYSLMOD) around the assembler code and submit it.

Hope this helps.
Panda.
