Hello,
How widely is IMS DC in-use today?
Thanks in advance.

Note the terminology. From Mr. Holland's reference (fair use extract) -
Quote: |
IBM calls IMS it's premier MVS/ESA and OS/390 transaction manager and it's premier hierarchical database manager. ... |
It would appear this quote dates from the middle 1990s - perhaps a little earlier. In other words, 20 years ago. |

Well, there are two ways to measure this.
1. Last I heard, there were about 7,000 IMS licenses worldwide.
2. Go to any shopping mall, bank, airport. It is a safe bet that the vast majority of credit card/bank card transactions taking place will involve a backend IMS system to do the heavy lifting.
Now consider how much commerce takes place worldwide with that paltry number of IMS licenses and the relative handful of IMS administrators that make it all happen.
Amazing, isn't it? |

IMS claims to process more than 50 billion transactions per day.

A recent benchmark produced by IBM showed that IMS/DC (aka IMS/TM) can handle over 100,000 transactions per second.

Yes, that benchmark used 20% of IBMs largest zEC12 processor, which is about the size of your kitchen refrigerator. ONE machine. Not a giant room filled with networked servers. |
