Hello,
FB or VB shouild be decided at design time - not by the programmer.
The biggest advantage of VB files is space savings which translates to less cost of storage and less processing overhead.
One of the files a vendor sends to our system each month is several hundred giga-byte VB. The first thing we do is copy this to FB and save between 40 and 45% of the space. The file has several formats and only one uses the longest length. |

Many times, the data will determine whether to use FB or VB. For example, I worked (many years ago) on an application where we were tracking job histories for employees. Since an employee could work at different jobs during his / her career, it made since to have the file as VB with a varying number of job histories.
VB data sets may -- or may not -- require less space than an FB data set. These days, there's not a lot of difference to the system in using VB or FB data so application requirements should drive the choice. |
