We are in the process of reviewing the responses from an RFP to replace our aging DASD. currently the DASD we have is RAID 1 and we're very happy with this BOX, but a need to expand and a DR site where we'll have our own DASD is having us question wether RAID 5 will suffice.
due to cost this solution looks most appealing but I wanted to get some real life success or horror stories with RAID 5 technology. is anyone willing to share an info, real life experiences, good or bad?
I'd appreaite it, thanks folks

Are you comparing RAID1 as mirrored DASD to RAID5/6 DASD generally ?
You can mirror RAID5/6 DASD using PPRC or XPPRC easily enough to keep copies of the data in sync at both sites.
As for the reliability of RAID5/6 DASD, I've never had any problems with it. |

No I just wanted a general feel for the reliability, sorry I should have been more clear.
Most places I've worked had a mix of vendor DASD, most RAID 5, and in all the years I've supported the DASD or some other team has we've had no problems with sparing in an array, I'm sure the possibility of 2 DISK's failing in a RAID array is possible, I've never seen it happen, but my experience is limited. also there's a concern of any performace degrigation when there's a drive failiure and is being rebuilt using a spare.
Thanks expat! I appreicate your response.
