Migrating the programs is not a big deal. But migrationg the existing data in online production critical ims database to DB2 table is a big challenge.
one way is to retire the segments one by one from the bottom to top.For doing that following are the steps usually followed.
1.Currently programs populates ims.
2.After first stage changes. populate ims segments as well as db2 tables.
3.If everything is fine in the next phase stop populating ims db.
4.Change report generations to db2 tables instead of ims db.
In this method historical data will be in ims itself.if you want to load that also in to db2 it is really a challenging task. in most production environments, it should not exceed one night. IT's really impossible to load millions of records in one night to db2 tables, eventhough u submit pationed jobes or high pripority jobs.
