Hi,
Do we need to collect SMF TYPE 04, 05, 34, and 35 as SMF TYPE 30 contains the same information that is in record types 04, 05, 34, and 35. Jus curious to know because our MAN DSNs flooding up so fast. Major contribution for the same are TYPE 4 and TYPE30

Start with Chapter 13 here: z/OS V1R7.0 MVS System Management Facilities (SMF).

Also from the same link about type 30 - it says that - the type 30 SMF record provides accounting information. It consolidates data that is found in record types 4, 5, 20, 34, 35, and 40 (which simplifies accounting by installation-written post processing routines), and it provides additional information. Use record type 30, because the record types that it replaces are generally not being updated with new measurement data.

Hope this helps.

Cheryl Watson's reference also points that SMF 30 can be used instead of many other record types.

I would definitely turn off collection of the 4, 5, 34, 35 records (and 20 if you are collecting them). Your site should also look at the volume of SMF data being collected and the size of the MAN data sets if they are filling so fast. The question is also, why so many type 4 records -- step termination should only be occurring in conjunction with other events? And by "major contribution" are you talking percent of records or total space used -- there can be a HUGE difference since you need to take into account the average record length as well as the percent of records?
