should not be that difficult to read the manuals and find out Yourself

for all You might want to know about the internal/hardware representation of numerics
the mother of all the knowledge is the Principle of operations

No, because there is no such thing as "packet decimal".

Ironically, just before I saw this thread I was reading an essay by Teresa Nielsen Hayden, "Dreadful Phrases", on malapropisms. You may benefit from reading it yourself.

USS as Unformatted System Services VS USS as Unix System Services
( gone on for a long time on IBM MAIN )

I was tempted to start one about DATA SET (*)
file VS modem

(*) a loong time ago it was written in both ways for both meanings icon_cool.gif

MOHAN KUMAR DURAIRAJAN, you keep asking about advantages of different formats. This is a quesiton students ask (because teachers ask them I guess). Professional programmers understand that the question is not one of advantages of, say, packed-decimal versus zoned decimal, but rather when does packed decimal make sense and when does COMP make sense and when does zoned decimal make sense and so forth. An "advantage" depends upon the specific requirements and can rapidly become a liability depending upon the situation.
