Previous OS release : z/OS 1.11
Current OS release : z/OS 1.13

Previous DFSORT release : 1.10
Current DFSORT release : 1.12

We've recently upgraded are OS and version of DFSort. Immediately after the upgrade we had batch failures in 4 programs that use internal sorts with no SORTWORK files allocated in JCL. After reading through the upgrade documentation I still don't know why all of a sudden the default allocation of SORTWORK files is not sufficient anymore. From what I understood, the DYNACPT option should prevent this from happening, not all of a sudden cause it to appear.

If anyone has an opinion/advice, it would be appreciated.

Regards

Check this link which explains in detail about the message in relation to DYNSPC

The installation default of DYNSPC is 256.

Change the DYNALOC=(SYSDA ,032) instead of 16

Thank you Koluso for the response. I will try the suggestions and see what happens. We do not wish to change any source code, so the FILESZ probably won't be done, especially since the volumes fluctuate during a month.

Secondly, I'm just trying to understand if no options changed as specified by us in parameters, why would the upgrade all of a sudden cause not enough space to be allocated dynamically?

Thirdly, our mainframe vendor informed us that we could enlarge our default SORTWORK files, but it would have a detrimental impact on our DASD usage and free space available with a definite financial impact.

Regards

The problem is being caused by the unknown file size but the change in behavior is related to DFSORT's storage allocations for intermediate work space. In V1R10, we had a tendency to over-allocate Hiperspace work space for smaller sorts like this. So the over-allocation of Hiperspace was masking the insufficient disk work space allocation due to the unknown file size. In V1R12, we cleaned that up so we wouldn't have jobs allocating more Hiperspace or memory object work space than they needed. While this improves overall system performance by freeing up storage resources, it hurts jobs like this which were getting by with insufficient work space allocations. Since you don't want to change the programs to pass accurate file size info, there are couple options

1. Increase DYNSPC so that we allocate more disk work space for unknown file size situaitons
2. Add a DFSPARM DD with an OPTION FILSZ=Ennnn statement where nnn is a reasonable estimage of the file size.
3. Add a few JCL sortwork data sets with sufficient space for completing the sort.

Thank you Dave.

I added the FILESZ parameter and sort completed successfully. However, also ran the job again without the parameter and also completed successfully, which has me stumped why it works now. :-)
