I've seen shops using IMB (Intelligent Mail Bar) Bar Codes and actually had been involved in implementing them. However, I'm stumbled upon the other kind of bar-code - "2D Bar Codes". I've searched about it on google and could not really answer the question - if - IMB code is same, similar or totally not-related to "2D Bar Codes".
My question might sound vague, however, if it makes a bit of sense, please assist. |

The US Post Office IMB is a linear height-modulated bar code, so it is only one-dimensional. 2D bar codes, by defintion, are two dimensional. |

Thanks John.
I'll get little greedy and will ask, which one is preferred by USPS (US Postal Services)?
Per me, the preferred way is IMB, no? Any justification, if one questions - Why?
I've already sent a note to USPS, however, I'm not hopeful. |

Thank you, Robert. Does that mean, they have their own plus & minus points, but what? |

SFAIK, IMB is the only one that will get the USPS to offer an automation discount. I know of no plans to upgrade to 2D (which doesn't mean that there aren't any, just that I don't know of any). |

The web site is RIBBS - USPS National Customer Support Center and if you need a lot of information, download the DMM (Domestic Mail Manual) which runs close to 20 MB of information about IMB (and all other things postal).
Currently, the USPS supports PostNet and IMB bar codes. They have proposed eliminating PostNet by January 2013, leaving IMB as their only supported bar code system. This decision, however, has been delayed several times already since mailers have a big amount commited to PostNet.
I'm not sure how much you can find about comparison of IMB / PostNet to other bar codes, since if you are mailing in the U.S. and wanting to use bar codes you have to use PostNet or IMB, period. |
