Just a note to let everyone know I'll be retiring at the end of this month (5/31/2012). I've been with IBM for 43+ years (plus a couple of summers in college) and I've enjoyed my career immensely. I've especially enjoyed being able to help people use the DFSORT/ICETOOL functions I developed, over many years, in new and interesting ways.

Once I retire, I won't be posting solutions any more since I won't have access to a mainframe to test them, and I don't like posting untested solutions. I may lurk a bit or I may not.

I'm looking forward to retirement, but I'll also miss this board. I'm happy to say that others on the DFSORT Team will continue to contribute.

Thanks to everyone for giving me the chance to earn a living all these years doing something that was a lot of fun for me.

Long live the mainframe, IBM, z/OS, DFSORT and ICETOOL!

I still remember the day when I asked a question on SORT, long back, and you came to the rescue. Needless to say, solution from you worked well.

I asked, "How do you know this much about ICETOOL and SORT".
Frank: I've 'invented' ICETOOL.

I kept on reading that statement and there was silence in the room. I'm sorry but I don't have the words to explain the ecstasy I felt inside.

I could not sleep for many nights, downloaded DFSort getting started right away and lurked through many other posts of yours on many other boards. I feel privileged that I "know" someone whose invention I use for my livelihood, in one way or other, and can convey a Thank You in "person".

Best wishes,

Regards,

I think, as a retirement present, IBM should give you one of those machines for employees which can run z/OS and lifetime free support. You'd only have to use it when you want :-)

For what you have done, for IBM, on these boards, I think it is the least they could do.

For your solutions we can't thank you enough, or often enough. Nor for the product.

I've personally learned so much in the last few months, because of the time and effort that you (and your colleague, but this one is for you) take.

Please lurk, and feel free to bash or delete my really bad stuff as it comes along :-)

Thanks, and enjoy.

Frank -

Re your comment above, from Wikipedia about Donald Knuth:

Quote:
He once warned a correspondent, "Beware of bugs in the above code; I have only proved it correct, not tried it."

Also, I summer programmed 1969-70 at IBM Poughkeepsie.

Good Luck!

Frank, as a fan, I am sorry to see you go. Best wishes on your well earned retirement.

The changes in DFSORT over the past couple of decades have been astonishing. SORT utilities used to be only good for, well, sorting. DFSORT has evolved far beyond that. As I like to tell my younger colleagues: "This is not your father's sort utility"

You and your team have done great work.

Someone should check the number of downloads of the actual DFSORT manuals. I bet it goes WAY up now!

Ditto what all the other users are saying. The first thing I thought when I saw the post title was "Oh no, I hope it's not Frank." You will, without a doubt, be missed by the entire SORT community. You never cease to amaze with your willingness to share your expertise on all things sort in a quick, concise, and CORRECT manner. Well done. Thanks for being a wonderful resource for all of us. You did IBM proud all these years.

Frank,

best wishes for the future, you are surely going to be missed.

For a person like me with no programming background, DFSORT has certainly helped me in carrying out some of my daily tasks and for that I'm very grateful.

Enjoy your retirement.
