but, there is a history for the job, only the disp parms have been changed.
does that affect the answer about deleting ahead of time,
or is CA11 smart enough to know that the chg in parms
requires a history change?

From the manual,
A primary function of CA-11 is to update the MVS catalog prior to a rerun.
The Catalog Management Table (CMT) is maintained for this purpose. It is
the source of information needed to perform all catalog maintenance
required to set up a rerun. The CMT is a partitioned data set with a
member for each job processed under CA-11.
The CMT is built automatically as jobs are placed under CA-11 control. The
first time a job executes with the U11RMS step as the initial step in the
job, CA-11 creates a member in the CMT for that job. Subsequent updates to
a job member must occur whenever the JCL for that job changes. These
updates can be initiated automatically or manually, depending on
installation options and user requirements.
