Hi...
I am not sure if this is the proper place to put this..but if it isn't I request the moderators to move it to another place please.....
I have seen quite a few posts here relating as to how to get a mainframe simulator or emulators. Hence I thought why not try it out myself, once I got an MVS 3.8J CD.
Hercules was the only choice of a hardware emulator. And Jay Moseley's site has a wonderful guide on how to begin. I ran it on my linux @home (a KDE debian distro) and it till date has worked like a breeze. Then I used a telnet client and c3270 emulator to connect to hercules. Got RPF,QUEUE and compilers for PL/1 and COBOL installed. Most of them you can get from Jay Maynard's repository of public domain s/w, Jay Moseley's site and the famous CBTTAPE.
I wanted to know if anybody is currently also doing some work in hercules...there is are a few hercules user's groups in yahoo, but I just wanted to know if any of them are here too..if there are any can you please share what extra JES2/JES3 or MVT mods have you been doing...
Plus I was really wondering if there is some weird way in which we can connect the mySQL running on my linux m/c with the hercules emulator so that something like a DB2I can be made...which can run mySQL queries via the TSO/RPF interface...I know it sounds ridiculous and impractical..but I am looking at it as a science project thingy... |

what kind of work do You mean ???
mods not already published, are mostly private QUICK AND DIRTY mods,
the chances of somebody sharing them with You is pretty slim, not for IP related issues,
but certainly because sharing means document and support ,
and documenting is much more boring than developing  |

yup those quick and dirty ones..but you are right nobody would care to give them for the sake of having to support it later.....lesson learnt this is not a good place to discuss hercules...

nobody said so... the only flames are those rising from topics dealing with use on Hercules of licensed software ...
and I watch closely the issue...
( if You look at the hercules sources, the latest ones at least, You might understand why )
nothing wrong asking about software freely available
I modified the CCSS ( control card subsystem of CBT Tape ) to make it run on mvs 3.8 j
publishing the mods is not up in my priority chain, right now, i' ll do it most probably in a couple of months
together with some other mods more strictly related to hercules |
