Hello,
I am trying to find out what should be the deciding factor to use DB2 on Z/OS or on LUW. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using either. Tried googling also not much luck :-( |

Hello,
Possibly not much luck because of the approach being used. . .
Usually a strategic direction is determined as to which platform is to be used first. Then options on that patform are considered.
I have not yet been involved with a selection decision that was based on picking some version of some product and from that choosing the platform/tier.
Maybe there is something i misunderstand. . .
Also, no one "outside" can tell you the advantages of one over another. What might be an advantage to someone else could be a disadvantage to your requirements. |

Thanks Dick,
Keeping in mind that the desicion will be based on the platform, what if the volume and process are desiding factors.
For e.g the amount of volume, security aspects, process such as Batch and OLTP how should one take a call?
I am trying to come up with basic differences between them and why and when one would go for either of it. |

They often are. . . This is why the platform is decided first. . . A platform that can carry the load needs to be used regardless of the attraction of some particular product feature (unless there is some really bad management on the loose ).

If the decision is to use some flavor of db2, then once the platform is selected, the flavor will already be determined.
And (repeating fwiw) - this is not the way i've seen organizations operate.
This sounds more like a class exercise that the material has already been presented to help the students "decide". |

There are significant differences at the database administration level, but the DML (select, insert, update, and delete) is very similar and getting closer with each new release. The biggest problem is learning the operating systems. If the person is proficient in z/OS (JCL, TSO, etc) and proficient in Linux/UNIX, then it will not be hard to learn the differences in the database products.
