Hi,

We have a requirement to generate few mainframe reports in German (Deutsch)/Chinese.

Currently these reports are generated in English, as part of a new client initiative we would need these reports to be generated in German/Chinese as well.

Is there any feature in COBOL that helps us to convert these reports to another language (in my case its German (Deutsch)/Chinese) ?

Any kind of direction would help us to proceed further.

NO!

You have to devise Your own translation procedure!
dictionary and friends!

Hello,

What i have seen done a few times it to create (in your case) 3 reports - one for each language. Each report contained all of the "Common Text". Variable values (quantity/amount/dates/etc) were inserted at run time.

One challange may be that the length of text may be longer or shorter between languages. . .

The language translation was not done dynamically.

Hi Dick,
Thanks for your inputs.

How was the German equivalent of "quantity" found in COBOL and replaced ? Was all hardcoded or you had a reference file maintained ?

Hello,

Everything that was "text" was hard-coded - once (a separate report) for each language.

a process for I18N is not something that can be devised on the spot by asking on a forum!

word/sentences dictionaries must be build,
an appropriate parametrization and coding for language stubs retrieval has to be devised

as a clumsy initial approach You might want to write one subroutine for each language
to fill the descriptive part of each report... but as I said, clumsy initial

if You had <for example> an bill of materials application
the parts descriptions in each supported language would be part of the BOM database

I will suggest looking into the possibilities of page print formatting (APF). If all variable information is not to be translated, you only have to change page definitions and/or overlays to change report language.
