Hi,

Is there anyway for me to work with mainframes, to write JCL, test my programs and to do hands-on work.

I cannot write or test JCLs in my company. I dont have access.

If i dont keep practicing, i am afraid that i would forget the concepts. Please suggest if there is any s/w or tool.

I know it is something silly, icon_sad.gif but please let me know if there is any way. icon_sad.gif

  1. The Hercules emulator -- a virtual 390 series machine on your PC.
  2. Buying a time-sharing connection. IBM sells such services to developers; probably other companies do, too. Costs are about USD 300-350/month, SFAIK.
  3. Hi, Opal!

Search these fora -- particularly the "Other Mainframe Topics" forum -- for more information. And, of course, search the fine Web; Bing is your friend.

So your company has mainframe, but you just don't have access?

And they won't grant access to a test region for a bright emplpyee with initiative who wants to develop skills?

Wow. Must be someone who can see this is wrong and can tell the gatekeepers to open up.

the issue belong to the same saga of ...

not making the documentation on installed products available
not having documented standards for the most common procedures
not having adequate in house support
not ... not

and even worse when the same is applied to external contractors

I'll vote in for this option and it takes some time to get the Hecules working, at times. (depends on your mileage..icon_smile.gif).
