copybook compilation

when a copybook only contains the record layout..why there is a need to compile it.since it will expanded during the program compilation.and after all we are compiling the whole program.

plz explain .

Hello,

If a copybook contains a record layout, it is not compiled separately. . .

Why does someone believe there is a need to compile this copybook?
