Hi,
I made a few changes in one of the copybook, which is used in 500 approx programs. In this total count, only few of the programs (Say 15) are using the modified variables. So we staged these programs in the production package.
As per the standards we need to recompile all the remaining programs (i.e. remaining 485 programs) that uses this copybook. This recompile process includes lot of manual work. Now my query is:
Is there any other way to make this recompile process automated. I missed to say that the tool we are using is Changeman.
Please let me know if any more information is required from my side and suggest me with the solution.
Thanks in advance. |

It is not for the standards sake we are recompiling the programs. We need to make sure that all the programs using the copy book must be compliled with the changed version of the copy book. This is the purpose of recompilation.
In changeman, recompilation process is simple. In the recompile menu option we just need to select the modules to have the modules recompiled. Say for 500 programs it would hardly take 1 hour.
I believe there is no short cut for this. |

according to the changman manual,
there is an option on the Stage from Development Panel for Mass Compile. |

also, now you realize why you have this particular task.
more experienced individuals in your organization avoided this task,
because they realize that the cheaper product
(as apposed to Endevor - which thru the implementation of SCL would allow for an automated solution)
was purchased because management decided that you time is not as valuable as you think it is |

well even the cheapest of all does it ...
with SCLM if things have been properly setup
You can <stage> to development a copy book...
when ( SCLM terminology ) build it SCLM will automatically rebuild at the development level all the objects depending on the copybook
and SCLM is an ISPF no charge feature
and then .... promote, promote, promote... up to the production &heaven
and all the rebinds will be done at the proper level with the proper DB2 subsytem
if things have been properly setup naturally ( seen it done it a very loong time ago ) |

Hi,
Thanks for your time Vijay.
Dick
Thank you very much for your concern. It is not like i was assigned to this task. I observed this task to be more time consuming. Hence thought of reducing the manual time consumption for this.
Enrico,
Thanks for suggestion. Please let me know whether this can be used for VSAM copybooks also or only for DB2 copybooks. Just now I started looking into the SCLM Manuals. |

Why do you say that there is a lot of manual-work? Did you try the auto-recompile option of ChangeMan? And I hope you understand the difference between "recompilation" and "staging" from ChangeMan perspective? Because, so far what you tell sounds like staging and not recompilation... |
