In Cobol 7th column is used for indicator.
Example if you want to write some comments like small description you can write by giving * in 7th column.

Hi,
Hyphen can also be used in the indicator field,ie. column number 7.
It's used to indicate continuation of line. When COBOL word is broken between lines(say line1 and line2),hyphen is used in line2.
Cheers,
