Hi All,

My client has User Manged datasets. We have planned to go for SMS managed storage groups.

Can anyone share the checklist, one has implemented for such a project?

Thanks in advance!!!

Your question is in DB2 part for the forum, so I'm not able to connect to your question well. Can you please elaborate bit more?

If you mean DB2 storage groups - please look here: publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/zos/basics/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.db2z.doc.intro/db2z_stogroups.html

This is also an intresting article: it.toolbox.com/blogs/db2luw/where-are-my-storage-groups-6485

However, if you are NOT talking about DB2 Storage Groups, possibly "SMS and VSAM" part of the Forum is a better place for your post.

for such projects if the organization does not have the proper skill set
it is customary to hire properly paid consultants ( not cheap )
detailed plans and checklist are usually proprietary deliverables

also seems a simplicistic approach to rely on forum replies for such a challenging project

go to
www.redbooks.ibm.com
and search for SMS
You will find 51 hits and browsing the titles You will certainly find something useful

Hello,

And a caution. . .

If you are "learning as you go" suggest you make more backups than you deem necessary in the beginning. Also suggest some "clones" - datasets that are only for the sms testing until ther process has been proven.

I have been multiple places where they decided to "roll their own" sms and managed to lose some very important data. . .

Possibly some of our folks who are quite experienced with storage management can say this better than i have. . .

I was expecting for some plan implemented by someone. This will not only help me to do the estimation, but also take appropriate measures for probable problems.

I have the basic idea, but never done on a large scale.

Than You all for the inputs.

to be sure that my initial reply was useful I went again to the redbooks url
and checked again to be sure the titles of the available publications

all You need is there at no charge,

but then You would have to work, much easier to use the work done by somebody else

Saurabh, Hi

Quote:
We have planned to go for SMS managed storage groups.

First, lets hear your plan for going to SMS. What are the steps you gonna be taking.

Because this involves a lots of planning and thinking not just ALTER's & REORG's, and it is sort of similar to how you manage your personal hard disk in your computer. For instance, I have 160 GB of hard disk with 5 drives, C:(for windows-30), D:(for Educational & Games-30), E:(Movies-30), F:(Workshop-30), G:(Songs-30), H:(Mobile-10). C Drive will contain, only software installations like winXP & programfiles. And most important stuff like GTA, most wanted & POP:WW will be in my system always. I will try to maintain atleast 1GB free in all the drives. If, that's not possible, i will move all the things which i am not currently using or watching to my portable 1TB. If windows crashes due to some new virus or slows down, i don't have to worry about losing anything in C drive. i will just insert my uninterupted windows installation DVD and my systems back in an hour. icon_cool.gif

Likewise, lots of decision needs to be made.
How you gonna be managing your catalogs and application DB's ? Are they gonna be using same storage group or separate ? Does each application need a separate storage group or not ? Split storage groups based on amount of data (Partitioned/ Non partitioned). Recovery Scenarios also need to be given a thought.

After having reasons for all your decisions, talk with your superior and work with Storage Management Group for the implementation.

And finally, one of the top things in your checklist should be reading this book before starting anything.

Thanks
Sushanth
