Hi All,

Would like to know if we can create a new GDG generation every time we run a transaction...

One way we could think is to put all the necessary records onto a VSAM and once the processing is completed - before returning the control back to CICS submit a JOB to copy the contents to a GDG.

Was hoping if there are any better or simpler ways to do it ...

Enjoy your weekend everybody ... icon_smile.gif

What is the problem you're trying to solve? This does not sound like a very good approach to whatever the problem is.

As Robert indicates, can you provide some more information for what you are trying to accomplish?

Besides the obvious WHY ?
(1) how many records do you anticipate writing out for each transaction
generation ?

(2) how big are the records ?

(3) how will the transaction be executed (manually or triggered) ?

(4) how often will the transaction run ?

Thanks Robert and Earl for the concerns ... icon_smile.gif

For those who are following me (I know the chances of this are pretty minimal but it feels nice to write like this ... icon_lol.gif ), they will remember I am working on a Migration project where we are trying to simulate the functionalities in source system...

This is not a business functinality as such.. In the Source system whenever they run a transaction, for all the output files that is defined, they create a new generation and write all records to it.

As of now I dont have any information on this - probably one info related is I know there are around 150+ files (i/p and o/p) being used ... based on the transaction - new genenrations are created for the GDGs associated ...

icon_redface.gif Forgot to check this... but i think I saw 4096 as record length somewhere... Will update later if I am wrong...

Basically the transactions are triggered as and when messages are being into a MQ

It depends on the transactions... To my understanding it can run frequently... certainly daily...

Personally, I wouldn't try to replicate the exact functionality. It sounds like what is being done is transaction journalling -- which can be done in CICS without resorting to the extreme measures you're talking about. Either the CICS transactions can issue the journal commands, or an independent software vendor product that handles all files for a region could be used. But both approaches would probably do the same as the source system and fit well into the z/OS CICS architecture as well.

Thanks a lot Robert for the advice...

Personally I haven't worked on Journals as yet... but will look into to understand what it is and see if that helps out... icon_smile.gif

True... icon_razz.gif ... I am trying to get information on how these GDG's are actually being used after they are created ... Probably then that part we could migrate to VSAM... icon_wink.gif

Since your tech support is new to this area also, you might want to consider bringing in some outside vendor support.

I can provide you with a couple of good recommendations if you
want to send me a private message.

Regards,

The recommendations are free, but I'm sure the solution is not icon_cool.gif
