Hi,

I would like to know the cause of a JCL error encountered while a common JCL when submitted by some other folks had JCL error while the same JCL when was submitted by a person who prepared it executed fine.
Given that the JCL doesn't have any files.

One reason i know is some shops donot allow the JCL to be submitted which is available in a PDS having the name starting with other person's TSO id.

I want to know some other possible reasons for such error, and here my requirement is i don't want to go to spool to check the error rather i want to check the error going to the job directly.

Thanks

This is insanity. There are many reasons a job might not work and without looking at the system output, you really have no idea how to fix the job.

Why run a job without any files? If the person had USER= and PASSWORD= on the job card, and someone else submitted the job, that could cause issues (depending upon the site exits used).

Hello,

While insane might be a bit much, it (the question) surely is inane. . .

Many (most?) experts would put this in the class of questions that are of no practical value what so ever, have no definitive answer (near-infinity is not acceptable), and therefore only waste time and server space. . .

i didnt undestand this " rather i want to check the error going to the job directly"

why not delete the line having userid=,password=
you job would not fail if it was succesful for the other person and u have the previleges of that person with respect to creation of files icon_biggrin.gif

Did you mean the Job-name is same as TSO-ID?

And what kind of JCL error did you get?

to determine that, he would have to look at the spool, but

He has no intention of actually doing anything himself, instead he poses a theoretical question

that we are supposed to answer.

Robert called it an 'insane' question,
Dick Scherrer, an 'inane' question,

IMUO, I think the TS has too much time on his hands, which would be better spent reading manuals, or 'gathering info' by looking at the spool output of the failed job and learning something there, instead of posting theoretical questions better posed in a bar instead of a technical forum.

I think you're being a little sensitive -- I did not call you insane; I called the idea of going directly to the JCL to fix an unknown problem without taking advantage of all possible data insanity. If you're running a JES3 site, then a job card error could cause the job to fail immediately -- but so could attempting to use (DISP=SHR) a non-existent data set, not to mention possible security problems (and so forth).

Without seeing the jcl (i guess its a RACF issue, canceling the job depending on job card values) it is insane to expect an answer to this
problem.

May be JCL-syntax check tool can help you.

Actually, Dick - I haapend to be in some interviews where they asked me to find the error by "just looking at JCL" they threw in front of me, at the time of interview. It was pretty much similar to the "situation" the way Meenakshi(she) has described. But it was an interview.

there are not that many rules about jcl syntax -
without regard to the esoteric spelling.
most of it is column positions and what is allowed there.

Yes, and the JCL owner inserting (a) unprintable character(s) in the JCl so
nobody could submit his/her JCL.

well, I don't get trapped by that kind of stuff,
I keep my profiles as ALL CAPS,
and I watch the messages when I open a member/ds
to see if there are any 'lower case' dinges.

that's a hold-over from having to deal with lil'turds who think it is cool to
write lower-case cobol. (that and goto's do tend to set me off).

Also, you won't mind going to spool to check what happened, I believe.

I always go straight to spool first.
Never waste time looking at the JOB in edit/view.

If I executed it, that means I sort-of desk-checked it,
probably TYPRUN=SCANed if first time with the job.

I worked one place where this clown would not use view
when playing with my jcl -
he (everyone) had/s my permission to use/copy anything
that I have.

but he would change the job in edit, submit it then exit with an end instead of cancel.

so I wrote a macro to shift all the pg/ln left 1 char and saved all my jobs.
then I wrote an imacro that I used on my jcl-pds which would shift all the
pg/ln right one char.
and since I always view my jcl, nothing would be changed.
he spent several hours one time trying to figure it out.
he even copied my jcl to his pds thinking that would fix-it.
