Senario: We have recieved an email from Tape Room (Tape Operations), mentioning that they would not be able to satisfy a Mount Pending Request for a Job XYZ on drive AF84 which requires VolSer: 306633, because:
Reason: Tape volume is in delete status. We don’t have this tape.
Now, when I issue command D U,,,AF84,1 on console it shows--
D U,,,AF84,1
IEE457I 11.21.44 UNIT STATUS 262
UNIT TYPE STATUS VOLSER VOLSTATE
AF84 359S A-MTP-M 306633 PRIV/REMOV
Question: As per Tape team (Tape volume is in delete status. We don’t have this tape.)
1- What does they mean by Tape Volume is in delete status??
2- If the Tape is not with them, then how come after issuing the command D U,,,AF84,1 on console it shows VOLSER: 306633 (As per my understanding once you insert the tape in the tape drive only then VolSer appears otherwise it would be blank)

1. The tape in delete status, depending upon your site procedures, could mean the tape is marked to allow reuse, or it may physically have been overwritten so the data is no longer available. This is a question best posed at your site since they know more about it than we do.
2. See the MTP? That means mount pending -- a request was made for that tape. Your understanding is wrong -- for an existing tape, the volume serial is part of the mount request and appears as soon as the request is issued, not when the tape is mounted.
