Hi,
Could anybody help me out with "How to delete GDG residing on Tape"
Steps which I've tried are as follows:
--I went to 3.4 ISPF
--Pulled the GDG name "abc.xyz.lmn.G0146V00"
--I tried Uncataloging the GDG first by typing U next to the GDG name.
--It gave me an error msg on the right hand corner "Tape Not Supported"
--I tried deleting the GDG by typing D next to the GDG name, it again gave me the same error msg "Tape not supported"
** I beleive the GDG has already been migrated to TAPE
** Please explain, how to delete GDG from a tape and also explain deleting a GDG would delete its catalog entry??? |

IEFBR14 in batch
IDCAMS in batch
If the file truly has been migrated and shows a migration level for the volume serial, you can use HDELETE command in TSO or batch. |

Hello,
If you do not have this yet resolved, suggest you post the jcl step that created the problem generation. |

Is there an expiry date shown when you perform a listcat against the generation in question. |

...and what Tape Management Subsystem do you have? Does pressing PF1 when you get the 'tape not supported' message provide any more detail? LISTCAT output would be helpful to as expat suggests.
Any of the example methods from Robert should work. Entering DEL / or HDEL / next to the file name in 3.4 should get rid of it. |

Hi everybody,
Thank you so much for your replies in sorting out this issue....
Dick Scherrer>> "If you do not have this yet resolved, suggest you post the jcl step that created the problem generation."
--Well, Sir, programmer asked ops to delete this GDG because it was bad, Im not sure which Job has generated this GDG.
Expat>> "Is there an expiry date shown when you perform a listcat against the generation in question."
--Sir, when I do LC beside the GDG it shows expiration date as : 0000.000 and Creation Date as: 2010.182
Pete Wilson>>"and what Tape Management Subsystem do you have? Does pressing PF1 when you get the 'tape not supported' message provide any more detail? LISTCAT output would be helpful to as expat suggests."
--Peter, at out site we use CA-MIM

I had a word with my onshore couterpart and as per him if we have to delete the GDG from DASD just type "D" beside the GDG in 3.4 ISPF and If we have to delete the GDG from a Tape we have to type "U" beside GDG name in 3.4 .
Earlier I tried typing "D" (by mistake, as I did not know that we have to type U instead of D, if the GDG is on TAPE) and then it gave me error msg: "TAPE NOT SUPPORTED"
*********
As per Robert Sample, we have to do HDELETE or DELETE beside the GDG name on TAPE, I've already tried typing "D" beside the GDG name and it was giving me msg: "TAPE NOT SUPPORTED".
Please if you could clarify, why my onshore couterpart was asking me to do "U" beside the GDG name in 3.4 ISPF if the GDG is on TAPE???
AND
any explanation in this regard would be highly appreciated..... |

U means uncatalog -- NOT delete. |

Hello,
Good to hear you now have a solution
Earlier i asked for the creating jcl because i was not certain if this was a dasd data set that had been migrated to tape or it this was an actual tape dataset (or something else).
As you discovered you cannot "D" a tape dataset. This is a feature not a problem. DASD datasets are often deleted (which will also uncatalog them in most cases). Tape datasets are not physically deleted - they are Uncataloged. |
