We have a catalog entry for a dataset on an SMS volume that does not exist.

A diagnose on the volume and catalog are clean.

An IDCAMS DELETE with NOSCRATCH generates the following failure
IDC3009I ** VSAM CATALOG RETURN CODE IS 90 - REASON CODE IS IGG0CLFO-54

An IEFBR14 generates the following failure
IGD17105I CATALOG ERROR WHILE DELETING DATA SET 941
data.set.name.removed
RETURN CODE IS 90 REASON CODE IS 54 IGG0CLFO
IGD306I UNEXPECTED ERROR DURING IGG0CLFO PROCESSING 942
RETURN CODE 90 REASON CODE 54
THE MODULE THAT DETECTED THE ERROR IS IGDVTSCU
SMS MODULE TRACE BACK - VTSCU VTSCT VTSDL DSP00 SSIRT
SYMPTOM RECORD CREATED, PROBLEM ID IS IGD00002

IDCAMS ALTER fails.

Any ideas ?

Did you look at the error messages manual?
IDC3009I
RETURN CODE 90
Explanation: Delete error.
Reason Code Description
4 Explanation: The system was unable to determine if the catalog is empty.
Programmer Response: Specify FORCE, RECOVERY, or run DIAGNOSE and recommended action.
contains some informations that you should consider...

The reason code was 54, not 4. This is a recent addition and means that a rename did to complete. The suggestion is to do an ALTER rename, which is why I mentioned the failure of the ALTER attempt.

I have looked at all the various messages generated by my attempts to jump on this dataset from a great height. IEC070I, IDC* various.

OK, you got me, my bad....
54 Explanation: DELETE failed because the data set is being renamed but it has not completed.
Programmer Response: Rename the data set with the IDCAMS ALTER command and then delete it.

Huh? 'Great height's?
I tend to go in low, not you?

Low is when you need to be sneaky (;-). I was been friendly with this dataset until it started to work it way though all of the IDC3009 return codes. Now I want it gone . . . . !

Why did the Alter fail ?
Was it a Racf problem ?
If no then try using program DELBCSR it can be downloaded from
ftp.software.ibm.com/s390/mvs/tools/VVDSFIX.VER13.TRSD
