A GDS is a simple way of keeping the last N generations of a dataset without having to keep changing the name.
What happened when you tried to create generation 13? |

The GDG idea is most useful when accumulating files for another process. For example, create a new file daily and merge all 7 into a weekly file.
If one day is a holiday and no file was created then only 6 are copied without any changes to the JCL.
If multiple files are created one day then the weekly process pulls them all (as long as the LIMIT is not exceeded).
You can read in the DFSMS Access Method Services for Catalogs www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/os/zos/bkserv/r9pdf/#dfsms about LIMIT and the other options. |

As long as there are new, improperly trained people joining this career.
or
Until every new person has both excellent teachers and excellent peers and who posses a strong sense of "doing it" or "learning it" for themself. . . It is one thing to have a doubt about something that was read or even "taught". I believe we can be quite helpful in these cases. It is another to basically ask the forum to "read it/do it for me".
Every year or 2 the new people have a less solid foundation than their predecessors.
And i do not see this improving any time soon - if ever.

one of the problems, as I see it, are the never ending new IDE's that do everything.
managers (bean counters) see programmers as resources,
and they (the managers) have been convinced by the snake oil salesman,
that you don't need to train people about computers and how they work,
you only have to train them for the IDE's.
IBM Rational Developer even has an extensive suite of things to replace systems programmers.
That's ok by me, most of my consultant work is cleaning up the messes that
the IDE jockys make. |
