Hi Sushil,
SortFiles are used to store records temporarily during the sorting process.
Who told only 7 files are used in Sort Work.............
From 1 to 100 sort work files can be allocated using the
SORTWKnn DD statement; the 'nn' suffix can be any number in the range 00 thru 99. SORTWKnn DD's are not used for a MERGE or a copy operation, or if the DYNALLOC parm is used. Each SORTWKnn MUST be on one unit & one volume. |

Some inaccurate information here. For DFSORT, 1 to 255 work data sets can be used. For SORTWKdd DD statements, dd can be any characters that are valid in a JCL DD statement (e.g. AA, A1, 1X, 01, Z9, etc). If SORTWKdd DD statements are specified, work data sets will NOT be dynamically allocated unless the DYNAUTO=IGNWKDD installation option was specified.

The work data set space required depends on several variables including the input file size, the storage available, the use of memory object sorting, hipersorting, data space sorting, etc. 7 SORTWKdd DD data sets may be just enough work space to complete the sort in some cases, but this is highly dependent on the specifics of the job.
