1) Which sort product do you use and also the release level may be useful.
2) What is the LRECL of the file
3) Positions, lengths and formats of the sort fields.

Hi,

DFSORT is being used.

The LRECL is 95

1-10 X-number PD
11-95 X-details CHAR

Do you realize that the llbb of the VB record is embedded in the first four bytes?
If the file is VB, then the X-number would be 5-14 and X-details would be 15-99.
That would make the lrecl 99.....

The only difference between sorting a VB file and sorting an FB file is accounting for the llbb......

Elixir,

See the following for more information:

http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/BOOKS/ICE1CG40/2.1.3?DT=20090519162426

If you're not familiar with DFSORT and DFSORT's ICETOOL, I'd suggest reading through "z/OS DFSORT: Getting Started". It's an excellent tutorial, with lots of examples, that will show you how to use DFSORT, DFSORT's ICETOOL and DFSORT Symbols. You can access it online, along with all of the other DFSORT books, from:
