i am in the midst of editing/viewing a program/ file, is there any command that i can issue in the command line to logoff.

instead of giving an 'X' on each screen and getting out, can i directly come out of the session?

Call your operations staff and have them cancel your TSO user id -- I've found this is quite good at coming out of the session!

or simply split/swap to sdsf and cancel your own tso session.

but keep in mind, if you are in an edit session and have recovery on,
when you sign on again, you will have a file in recovery status.

When I use PComm's "Disconnect", my TSO session is immediately killed.
(I use this when even PA1 can't get me out of a looping rexx)
