Hi,

We are migrating from Mainframe to Unix and hence we have to transfer all the files from Mainframe to Unix. Most of the files in Mainframe are in Packed, binary etc...

I tried using BPXCOPY but it didnt work..

Kindly advise.

Regards,
Subbu.

Hello,

A major understatement. . .

Unless something purchased for the target environment will automatically convert mainframe data to the target, you will not do this with a single simple utility. . .

If you explain in more detail what you have and what the target will be, we may be able to offer suggestions.

FWIW - i was the project and technical lead on a project that shut down a 4 IBM mainframe data center and migrated the entire application inventory to unix (hp-ux). . . Even with great tools, it was not automatic. . .

Broadly speaking, every file with non-display numeric fields must be converted (file by file) to a format with display numeric fields before the file is sent from the mainframe to the Unix system. This typically requires some form of hand-coded conversion (using SORT, File Aid, a programming language, or whatever) for each file. Such a conversion effort may well require significant amounts of time.

What utility/facility do you have available to you that works for both ends of the physical connection, or do you have to use some intermediate area to store and forward this data? Is there even a physical connection between the systems?
