Can I specify my Tape to be mounted in a particular drive explicitly in a SMS environment?
I tried with keeping unit=/ucb . But the mount was pending for a longtime and finally cancelled it. I checked the status of the drive wen my mount was waiting, the drive was free(means no tape is mounted or its not allocated to any jobs). And moreover its a scratch mount. |

Speak to your site support people, they will tell you what you can and can not do. |

This is very much a site specific question; what works at one site will not work at another site. |

So u mean to say that it all depends on the ACS routines that control my SMS environment, am i right?
If its Yes, then can I get any expert advise to acheive that? |

ACS routines may or may not be involved -- for example, if the device in question is not a tape library then what good would changing the ACS routines do?

You have been given expert advice -- consult your site support group. |

No true expert would advise allocating some specific drive. The organizations i support have not permitted this for application processes for many, many years. . .
Why do you believe this should even be considered? |

Yes, thats true, in my shop also we cant explicitly force our tapes to go to a specific drive. Being a support person in my site, i got a request from my user that he needs his tape to be loaded in a specific drive. I obviously denied him that it was not possible.
But, i would like to know, is there anything else that can overirde my current setup and allow me address a specific drive? Thats the reason I started this thread. |

Just for a note - expat, Robert and Dick ...all of them have at least 35 years of experience with Z-servers (Mainframes) - so they are experts and give expert advices! Grin! |

As Robert mentioned - you should talk with your senior system support - who should know if this is an option (hopefully, it is not). |
